The Lebanese University seeks to empower women and is keen to disseminate equality and sustainability by breaking gender norms and supporting women entrepreneurs and empowering women economically. For this purpose, the Lebanese University discussed an implementation plan for the “FREE Project” focusing on the academic role of women and the model of empowerment, equality and sustainability in the universities of the Mediterranean region in light of the “2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development” and proposed a plan to empower women and break gender norms by disseminating equality, enhancing trust, and developing the language of communication to build positive relationships in the societal environment and the workplace, and organized a dialogue entitled "Economic Empowerment of Women" related to gender discrimination and the challenges women and youth face to join the labor market. 

Lubna Khaled, a student from the Faculty of Engineering – First Branch at the Lebanese University / Mechanical and Computational Engineering, won the title of Best Presenter at the Seventh International Conference on Sustainable Innovation (ICOSI 2023) hosted by Muhammadiyah Yogyakarta University Indonesia on August 9 and 10, 2023.

In front of an international jury, student Lubna Khaled presented (online) her research paper, which was prepared under the supervision of Dr. Mervat Madi and Dr. Samer Maarawi, and related to the design of a heat exchanger for a ship under the title:

Design of a Double Pass Shell and Tube Heat Exchanger for Marine Application with COMSOL Multiphysics

The research paper forms part of Lubna's master's thesis in computational engineering, which focuses on designing a heat exchanger system to cool marine ship engines and enhance sustainability by taking advantage of waste heat in diesel engine emissions.

In her testimony about the Lebanese University, Lubna appreciates the opportunities given to her by the university as well as the efforts made by professors in accompanying their students despite all circumstances.

A group of first-year master's / architecture students at the Faculty of Fine Arts and Architecture - Second Branch / Lebanese University won the international architectural competition organized by the international company (Saint-Gobain) and dedicated in 2023 to the Portuguese city of Lisbon.

During an official ceremony organized at the Higher Institute of Business (ESA) - Beirut in the presence of its director, Mr. Maxence Doyo, the CEO of Saint-Gobain in Lebanon and Jordan, Mr. Mohieddine Al-Hashash, and members of the international jury, the results of the competition were announced, so that the team consisting of Mona Beydoun and Rena Fawaz won the special prize.

The projects of Nadia Abu Abdo, Jackie Raidy and Sahar Raji and Birla Azzi and Ward Qassem also received an oral mentorally from the jury.

Under the supervision of a group of faculty professors (Dr. Charbel Meskina and Eng. Roland Mitri) and in the presence of Dr. Reem Zgheib, Head of the Department of Architecture at the Faculty), the students presented architectural design projects that simulate the preservation of the special character of the Portuguese city of Lisbon, taking into account its nature, sustainability and ancient and diverse history.

Saint-Gobain is a company specialized in sustainable building materials, and seeks to share its technical and material capabilities to help young people and urge them to innovate and succeed in the service of implementing the Sustainable Development Goals - Agenda 2030.

The Council for Women in Energy and Environmental Leadership (CWEEL) of the Society of Energy Engineers (AEE) awarded Dr. Farah Zein from the Faculty of Fine Arts and Architecture at the Lebanese University the Sustainable mentorship award for 2023.

The award aims to recognize women active in the energy sectors from the MENA region, while the Council for Women in Energy and Environmental Leadership (CWEEL) offers an orientation program to support men and women in developing their careers in the fields of energy efficiency, renewable energy and energy technology.

The awards were presented during the Women in Energy Summit hosted by the ESA Business School in Beirut.

Student Ghada Saad, from the Faculty of Fine Arts and Architecture – First Branch at the Lebanese University, won first place for the best graduation project in architecture within the Chadirji Award for Architecture Students in Lebanon in its twenty-third edition.

 During a ceremony hosted by the Order of Engineers and Architects in Beirut, 17 projects participating in the award were presented to architecture students graduating in 2022 from (Faculty of Fine Arts and Architecture / Lebanese University, Lebanese Academy of Fine Arts/University of Balamand, Lebanese American University, American University of Beirut, Beirut Arab University, Holy Spirit University - Kaslik, Notre Dame University, Medina University and University of Venice), where the students presented their projects in front of a specialized jury and in the presence of a group of deans of faculties of architecture and university professors. and engineers and students.

According to the results of the judging, student Ghada Saad won the first prize for her project related to "Reformulating the Concept of Social Housing in Palestinian Communities / Residential Complex in Al-Sikka neighborhood in Sidon.

Student Jason Elie Qurban (Faculty of Arts – Second Branch) and Marianne Claude Habib (Faculty of Arts – Fourth Branch) received a special praise and mention from the jury for their projects:

Nour Antoine El Hajj, a student from the Faculty of Mass Communication – Second Branch at the Lebanese University, won a "Fellowship Opportunity for Young Journalists Writing in Arabic in the Middle East and North Africa" whose first edition was launched by AFP in partnership with the Agence Universitaire de la Francophonie in the Middle East.

Al-Hajj, who is pursuing a third year of audiovisual journalism, will have a two-month internship in the Arab editorial department of the AFP/Beirut regional office.

Al-Haj (second place) was selected from nine students who took a written test after more than thirty candidates from several countries in the region applied for the fellowship opportunity.

The launch of the first edition of the fellowship opportunity in Arabic in 2023 follows the launch of an annual fellowship opportunity dedicated to young journalists writing in French in 2021.

Through this grant/opportunity, AFP seeks to encourage the maintenance of a high standard of journalistic writing in Arabic to work within its services both at its regional headquarters in Nicosia and in its offices in the Middle East and North Africa.

Students Fatima Kanaan and Asia Abbas from the Faculty of Arts and Humanities at the Lebanese University won the short story competition "Lebanon as we dream of it", organized by the Agence Universitaire de la Francophonie Middle East in cooperation with a number of partners.

A panel of journalists and representatives of the organizers judged the stories and selected the eighteen winners from more than 630 short stories edited in French, Arabic and English, while prizes were distributed to the young winners in a ceremony held at the National Library on April 13, 2023.

Fatima Kanaan (College of Arts and Humanities – Second Branch) won first place in the French short story category, while Asia Abbas (College of Arts and Humanities – Third Branch) won second place in the Arabic short story category.

It is noteworthy that the stories of the winners and winners will be published on the websites of the organizers and in local newspapers, and the Antoine Library will publish a collection of the best hundred stories in the competition in hard and electronic versions.

At the invitation of the World Speech Organization, the Faculty of Mass Communication at the Lebanese University organized a celebration of World Speech Day, during which the best orator was selected from among the students of the first and second branches.

The World Rhetoric Organization chose this year's theme under the title "Towards a Better World", believing in the importance of giving an echo to "voices from unexpected places", and the participants in the public speaking competition (in English) from the Faculty of Mass Communication adopted the topic with the addition of a local framework to carry their speeches ideas that contribute to making "Lebanon a better place" at the economic, agricultural, educational, humanitarian and social levels.

Daniela Fadi Chedid, from the Faculty of Economics and Business Administration – Second Branch at the Lebanese University / second year Master in Accounting and Auditing, won the first prize in the competition (Mot d'or de la francophonie 2023) organized by the Agence Universitaire de la Francophonie in the Middle East (AUF-Moyen Orient) in partnership with the French Association (APFA).

Reem Hamza (from the Faculty of Arts and Humanities – Third Branch) won the second prize and Maroun Abizaid (from the Faculty of Law, Political and Administrative Sciences – French Branch) won the third prize.

Shadid's winning of the first prize in the competition will give her the opportunity to reside in Paris and participate in the French Business Day and the Golden Words of the Francophonie in March 2024.

The three students applied to the competition, which is organized within the activities of the month of Francophonie, and took the written exam with their colleagues from private universities on March 21, 2023, then the students of the Lebanese University qualified for the oral exam stage on March 28, 2023.

It is noteworthy that the competition aims to encourage competitors to use the French language in entrepreneurship, and students from several Lebanese universities participate in it.

Students of the Faculty of Law, Political and Administrative Sciences – French Branch of the Lebanese University (Liana Dagher, Sophie Nader and Maria Mikhael) distinguished themselves in the entrance exam at the Regional Center for Professional Training of Lawyers in Paris (CRFPA).

The three students completed their first year of Master of Law at the Lebanese University before moving to Paris to pursue a second-year master's degree at the Sorbonne and Aix-Marseille universities, then apply to CRFPA and take the entrance exams.

The importance of joining the Regional Center for Professional Training of Lawyers in Paris lies in the fact that it prepares its members to become original lawyers of the Paris Bar Association, after selecting a small and distinguished number of thousands of students who apply.

Students Batoul Hamada and Fatima Khaled Al-Dahwish from the Faculty of Arts and Humanities - Fifth Branch at the Lebanese University won the literary and cultural competition organized by the "Sardoon Tweets" club.

Al-Dahwish ranked seventh in the short story category for her story "You Will Return", while Hamada ranked tenth in the same category for her story "The Clone".

Professor Doria Farhat from the college participated in the jury, while Munira Al-Hajjar and Rami Eid reached the second stage of the competition.

The student Karina Antoun received the honors degree with special verbal congratulations from the defense committee for the doctoral thesis prepared in partnership between the Higher Institute of Doctorate in Science and Technology / Lebanese University and the French University of Lorraine (Université de Lorraine) and in cooperation with the Faculty of Engineering - IMT-Mines Alès under the title:

"Procédé d'ignifugation innovant et biosourcé pour les matériaux lignocellulosique"

 Her doctoral thesis focused on the use of phytic acid extracted from sunflower waste to develop natural fibers and wood panels that are one hundred percent non-flammable using environmentally friendly materials, and the results of the study were published in batches in 3 refereed scientific journals, patented and its first experiments proved industrially effective.

 Karina Anton's work was supervised by Prof. Roland El Hajj and Prof. Michel Nakhl from the Lebanese University, Prof. Nicolas Brosse from the University of Lorraine and Dr. Rodolphe Sonnier from the Faculty of Engineering (IMT-Mines Alès).

 Karina, who holds a degree in chemistry, a master's degree and a doctorate in materials science from the Lebanese University, says: "Today I am in France thanks to the Lebanese University and the level of education I have gained there."

 She adds: "My experience with professors in the master's and doctoral stages was very good in terms of daily and professional follow-up of my work despite all the difficult circumstances that Lebanon and its national university are going through."

 Between 2021 and 2022, Karina Anton won a number of awards for the best scientific posters she submitted to international scientific conferences in France.

Marilyn El Khoury-Dandan, a student from the Faculty of Fine Arts and Architecture – Second Branch at the Lebanese University, won the second prize in the Arab Starpack Student 2022 packaging competition organized by the Lebanese Center for Packaging (Liban Pack) in cooperation with the United Nations Industrial Development Organization (UNIDO).

 Student Al-Khoury-Dandan won the second prize / visual packaging category after presenting the project (The Super Box-Sesobel), which is a box with 5 chocolate bars with different flavors inspired by the social service she provided at the (Sesobel) Foundation for Child Care.

 Marilyn says children, despite their fatigue and illness, are able to give us love, strength and hope. She adds: "The concept of 'The Super Box' is about children's super ability to give us strength and love of life, and the chocolate was wrapped in an attractive way that shows children's heroism."

 Regarding her studies at the Lebanese University, Marilyn said: "I finished my bachelor's degree in graphic design and visual communication and will continue my master's degree in the same specialization and at the same university despite all the pressures.  Arab Starpack Student targets university students in the Middle East and North Africa and aims to ensure inclusive and sustainable industrial development by engaging young people, unleashing and supporting their creativity, spreading awareness about the importance of packaging and creating a real partnership between the packaging industry and the educational sector.

 It is noteworthy that the winners of the competition in its Arabic version are entitled to participate in the global packaging competition organized by the World Packaging Organization (WPO: World Packaging Organization), which gives them the opportunity to present their projects at the international level.

A student team from the Faculty of Engineering – Second Branch at the Lebanese University won the second prize in the ACI Concrete Solutions Competition for the year 2022 in its Lebanese version, under the supervision of Dr. Pierre Matar.

Third-year civil engineering students (Edwin Abou Jaoude, Ghaya Deeb, Talia Kayrouz, Joelle Maroun and Alain Maroni) submitted a video showing how to recycle concrete for reuse in new concrete mixes, contributing to a sustainable building that promotes the preservation of the ecosystem.

The American Concrete Institute seeks to motivate civil engineering students to participate in local and international competitions, apply their practical knowledge and develop their concrete skills to improve the quality of life of humans through a healthy ecosystem.

Mira Ali Berjawi, from the Faculty of Law, Political and Administrative Sciences, Fifth Branch at the Lebanese University, won first place in law and political and administrative sciences in the fifth edition of the Student Research Competition (AUESRC) organized by the American University in the United Arab Emirates.

 The student Berjawi submitted to the competition a research prepared under the supervision of Dr. Omar Shehadeh and with the support of Dr. Ahmed Ishraqieh under the title "Reviews submitted before the Constitutional Council and the scope of control over the constitutionality of laws", and the research received the attention of the legal arbitration committee, which granted her the rank of excellence.

 Berjawi participated in the competition with more than two hundred students from Middle Eastern countries, to be the only winner from Lebanon.

 It is noteworthy that Mira Berjawi is pursuing a third-year bachelor's degree in law at the Faculty of Law, Political and Administrative Sciences – Fifth Branch, and is a student coordinator at the Center for Professions, Innovation and Entrepreneurship (Centre MINE) at the Lebanese University.

Nathalie Ghosh, a student from the Faculty of Arts and Humanities at the Lebanese University, won the Best Literary Criticism Award at the tenth edition of the cultural and literary competition (Le Choix Goncourt de l'Orient 2022), organized by the Agence Universitaire de la Francophonie in cooperation with the French Institute in Lebanon and sponsored by the Goncourt Academy.

 Ghosh will represent Middle Eastern countries at the Goncourt Award Announcement Ceremony in Paris on November 3, 2022, preceded by a dinner with Goncourt academics.

 Ghosh won the award based on her literary critical review of Clara Dupont-Monod's S'adapter, and the jury selected Ghosh's review from a group of reviews submitted by students from Saudi Arabia, Egypt, Jordan, Iraq, Sudan, Palestine and Lebanon.

 It is noteworthy that the student Nathalie Ghosh is pursuing a master's degree at the Faculty of Arts and Humanities / French Language and Literature under the supervision of Dr. Rana Baroud, and participated in the competition under the supervision of Dr. Rita Abdel Nour and Dr. Marie-Jose Salama, and had several contributions to reading and criticizing a group of selected books from the Goncourt Academy.

The International Documentary Film Festival in Amsterdam (IDFA) has selected Lebanese University graduate Hala El Kouch as part of its Project Space program, which aims to support artistic talent in the world of cinema.

 Of the 260 projects, only sixteen films will be supported in Project Space for 2022, and Hala will participate in The Place Where I Belong.

 In the details of the film, after the explosion of the port of Beirut, Hala decides to walk alone in the streets of Beirut for the first time in her life to reach the treatment session, so that the capital's Corniche will have an impact on her life, and the young director will convey the pain of the Lebanese through this film in a different way and in an innovative way.

 Hala, who holds a BA in Film and Television and a Master's degree in Film Directing from the Faculty of Fine Arts and Architecture, talks about her experience at the Lebanese University:

 "The journey of five years of my life at the Lebanese University will never be forgotten, as it is in this university that our personality is refined. The professors gave us the keys and directed us to the doors of success, but this success is conditional on perseverance and passion."

 Hala has participated in more than twenty international film festivals and won the "Best Short Narrative Film" award at international festivals such as the European Film Festival, the Beirut Greek Film Festival, the Lebanese Film Festival in Canada and others.

 Hala Al-Kush's "The Perfect Picture" has participated in nearly twenty festivals and won six awards, most recently at Women voices now in Los Angeles.

 In 2021, Al-Kush won an award in the photography competition and was named Canon Women with Vision Middle East.

Ronza El Hachem from the Higher Doctoral Institute in Arts, Humanities and Social Sciences / Lebanese University won first place in the 180 MT180s or "My Thesis in 2022 Seconds" competition organized by the Agence Universitaire de la Francophonie (AUF-Moyen Orient) in cooperation with the National Council for Scientific Research (CNRS-LIBAN).

 Al-Hashem continues to prepare her thesis / specialization in French language and literature under the supervision of Professor Rima Mouloud, and the jury praised the seriousness, commitment and preparations of the student Al-Hashem, who participated in the competition and achieved first place.

 Students and doctoral students in various scientific and humanitarian disciplines from the Lebanese University and private universities participate in the annual competition "My Thesis in 180 Seconds", and one of the conditions of the competition is the obligation to submit research projects in French in front of a jury within a period of three minutes and in a simplified and attractive manner.

The student Samah Mechmashani Al-Mazouk received the honors degree with special verbal congratulations from the committee that discussed her doctoral thesis prepared between the Laboratory of Health and Environmental Microbiology (LMSE) of the Higher Institute of Doctorate in Science and Technology, the Faculty of Public Health at the Lebanese University and the INRAe laboratory at the University of Lille, France, under the title:

 "La technologie des barrières utilisant des enzymes à pouvoir déstructurant et du carvacrol microencapsulés pour lutter contre les bioflms de bactéries pathogènes"

 The doctoral thesis focused on the use of new biological techniques to get rid of biological membranes (Biofilm) and thus from harmful and / or pathogenic bacteria in the food and hospital sectors, and nanoparticles were used as carriers of a natural compound extracted from vegetable oils, which is (Carvacrol), which has a deadly effect on bacteria and the addition of two protein-digesting enzymes with this material, namely (Pepsine) and (Trypsine).

 The results of the very important study have been published in batches in international refereed scientific journals, and may be registered with their applications as a patent.

 It is noteworthy that Prof. Munther Hamza and Dr. Khaled Al-Omari supervised the thesis from the Lebanese University, while it was supervised by Prof. Noureddine Chehayeb and Dr. Adam Gharsalaoui from the University of Lille, France.

Lebanese University student Reem Bayaa discussed her doctoral thesis, in which she presented the results of her scientific research related to advanced approaches to the diagnosis and follow-up of pulmonary tuberculosis, and the committee congratulated the discussion between the Lebanese University and Claude Bernard University in Lyon, France.

 The results of scientific research in Bayaa's thesis led to the identification of innovative and promising immunological laboratory tests based on patients' blood samples in a way that allows easy diagnosis and follow-up treatment, and these results were published in research articles in international scientific journals.

 Bayaa completed her doctoral thesis in microbial diseases under the joint supervision of the Laboratory of Health and Environmental Microbiology of the Faculty of Public Health, the Higher Institute of Doctorate in Science and Technology - Lebanese University and the Laboratory of Emerging Pathogens (Laboratoire des Pathogènes Émergents) of the Claude Bernard University in Lyon, France (Université Claude Bernard - Lyon 1).

 The thesis was supervised by Dr. Munther Hamza and Dr. Bashar Ismail from the Lebanese University and Dr. Jonathan Hoffman and Dr. Florence Adair from Claude Bernard University – Lyon 1.

 It is noteworthy that the study samples were collected from tuberculosis patients in five countries: Lebanon, Paraguay, Madagascar, Bangladesh and Georgia, as part of a joint scientific work with the Gabriel Global Network of the Mérieux Foundation and with the National Tuberculosis Control Program of the Ministry of Health through the tuberculosis centers in Tripoli and Akkar, with the technical contribution of Ms. Sarah Omaria and Professor Taha Abdo in the Laboratory of Health and Environment Microbiology.

The doctoral thesis of Lebanese University graduate Najwa Kandakji has been selected to be published in a book within the publications of the Cairo International Festival for Experimental Theater in its twenty-ninth session, which will be held between September 1 and 8, 2022.

 The thesis, for which she obtained her Lebanese PhD in Art and Art Sciences / Theater from the Higher Doctoral Institute in Arts, Humanities and Social Sciences at the Lebanese University, is entitled "Employing the Digital Image in the Theatrical Performance between Dramatic Action and Media Based on Three Experiences from British Theater", and was supervised by Dean Professor Jean Daoud.

 The thesis topic is at the heart of the research on the mechanisms of using the manufactured image in the presentation from an analytical directorial point of view based on the basic methodologies in the science of representation.

 The thesis was selected as part of a competition launched by the festival management at an international level, while Dr. Kandakji was invited to attend the festival, which will be held under the auspices of the Egyptian Ministry of Culture in Cairo, to present a visual presentation on the research, its axes, conclusions, and the academic and artistic addition that it sought to achieve.

The documentary "Escape after the Explosion", prepared by Lebanese Media University graduate Joelle Hajj Moussa, won the silver award at the forty-third American Telly Awards in the category of public interest awareness.

 The investigation, which was filmed for Alhurra TV in the last quarter of 2020, reviews the most prominent factors, causes and tragic circumstances that led a large number of Lebanese to risk their lives and resort to illegal immigration via death boats in search of a better life.

 Joelle Haj Moussa, who is pursuing a master's degree in economic and development journalism at the Faculty of Mass Communication, talks about her experience in media work after graduating from the journalism department at the faculty/bachelor's degree, saying: "A large part of my professors in the Faculty of Mass Communication are professional and competent, and some of them provide us with the basic principles of media work."

 "From the first day we entered the Lebanese University, we knew that we would be facing great challenges on more than one level, and that the person who reaches graduation from this university is the hardworking, serious and persistent student – in other words, the hero."

 "Despite all the difficult circumstances, I still believe in the Lebanese University, hoping that state officials will believe in it," Haj Moussa concluded.

 It is noteworthy that the Telly Awards Festival honors the most prominent global achievements in the field of advertising, television programs, video productions, cinema and documentaries, and is attended by a group of American and international media outlets and giant companies in the field of media and technology.

Sandra Antoine Sukkar, a student at the Faculty of Fine Arts and Architecture – Third Branch at the Lebanese University, was crowned World Champion in Mixed Martial Arts (MMA) in the tournament matches held in Amsterdam / Netherlands on March 27, 2022.

 After receiving the gold medal, Sukkar expressed her great happiness with this victory, saying: "I worked a lot to reach this stage and I am very proud to raise the flag of my country high, especially in the current circumstances that Lebanon is going through."

 Sandra, who has been passionate about sports since childhood, continues to study the field of advertising and visual arts, a major in which she chose to study at the Lebanese University to excel.

 "I chose to study at the Lebanese University because it is the university of the homeland and because I am confident in the level of its graduates and its international reputation. Professors at the Lebanese University give from their hearts and their giving is not limited to education. They give their humanity and I will never forget the credit of my teachers when they raised money to fund my participation in a world championship."

 Sukkar is the recipient of a number of gold, silver and bronze medals in several international and local championships.

Lebanese University student Bushra Moussawi represented Lebanon at the Global Peace Chain World Peace Summit in Dubai between February 23 and 26, 2022, with the participation of "Peace Ambassadors" from around the world.

 Global Peace Chain selected Moussawi from Lebanon to attend the summit, which served as a meeting place for peacebuilders of young leaders and social entrepreneurs to exchange ideas on their projects related to peace, innovation, human rights and climate.

 At the Peace Youth Summit, Al-Mousawi presented the idea of her own project, which is based on the importance of teaching English to young people for free, and partnered with a student group to provide solutions to the problem of climate change and proposals to improve higher education in the Middle East, in addition to proposing plans to implement the Sustainable Development Goals.

 Bouchra Moussawi is pursuing a first-year study / Life Sciences at the Faculty of Science – First Branch at the Lebanese University, and is active and volunteer in a number of local and international associations and within United Nations programs concerned with working to implement the Sustainable Development Goals – Agenda 2030.

The student Jana Ayyash from the Higher Institute of Doctorate in Science and Technology / Lebanese University registered a patent in the field of industrial chemistry at the Ministry of Economy and Trade / Lebanon (No. 12408) under the title:

Innovative Chitosan Hydrogel from shrimp shells for biofilter system

The patent, which was registered with the Ministry's Intellectual Property Protection Department on December 21, 2021, concerns the manufacture of ketosan liquid or gel from prawn shells to be used in the manufacture of a filter capable of removing organic and mineral pollutants and forming an antibacterial in wastewater.

Ayyash is pursuing the preparation of her doctoral thesis in the field of water and environment in partnership between the Higher Institute of Doctorate in Science and Technology / Lebanese University and the French University of Reims, under the supervision of Professor Akram Hijazi from the Lebanese University and Dr. Luminita Catoire from the French University and in cooperation with Dr. Hussein Hamad (Lebanese University), Dr. Mohamed Medlej and Dr. Anis Daou.

Dr. Rola Mahmoud El-Zein (Lecturer in the Department of Pediatric Dentistry and Public Oral Health / Faculty of Dentistry – Lebanese University) won the Union of Arab Scientific Research Councils Award for the year 2021 in the category of young researchers in the field of biotechnology, for the research funded by the Lebanese University under the title:

 In vivo evaluation of the virucidal efficacy of chlorhexidine and povidone-iodine mouthwashes against salivary SARS-CoV-2. A randomized-controlled clinical trial

 This research acquires scientific and practical importance in the field of reducing the spread of Corona infection through salivary droplets, and was carried out by Dr. Al-Zein under the supervision of the former President of the Lebanese University, Prof. Fouad Ayoub, and a research team consisting of Prof. Fadi Abdel Sater, Dr. Suha Fakhr El-Din, Dr. Pierre Abi Hanna, Dr. Rita Feghali and Dr. Hamad Hassan.

 The research is the world's first randomized clinical trial to study the effect of two mouthwashes on SARS-CoV-2 salivary virus, and samples were taken from people who have been infected with the coronavirus.

 The importance of the research lies in the fact that it presented an innovation to mitigate the transmission of Corona virus infection in dental clinics, and its results showed that the two mouthwashes available globally (chlorhexidine and povidone-iodine) reduce when used the amount of virus in salivary droplets, which reduces the rate of infection, which is a general social benefit, especially in places of hospitalization, mixing or quarantine.

 It is noteworthy that the research was published in the International Scientific Journal specialized in the field of dentistry (Journal of Evidence Based Dental Practice) after being registered in (LCTR-Lebanon Clinical Trials Registry) linked to the World Health Organization through the International Clinical Trials Registry (WHO ICTRP) platform.

Marwa Rima, from the Faculty of Engineering – First Branch at the Lebanese University, represented Lebanon in the "UNESCO Virtual Student Forum on Global Citizenship Education for Sustainable Development: Taking Action for Man and Planet" held online between 7 and 9 December 2021.

 The forum was an opportunity to exchange ideas and experiences among young leaders on education and citizenship and how to reach more just, peaceful and sustainable societies, in addition to discussing the role of formal education in that process.

 Student Rima, the younger young leader of the Forum, presented a project on human rights and discussed it on the first day of the Forum with a number of participating students and international specialists.

 "This experience changed my life, I always believed in change and today I am more confident in that and I see life from a different angle. We have to believe in ourselves, celebrate our little successes and remember that an inch of movement is better than a mile of intention."

Asma Sarhan, a graduate of the Faculty of Science at the Lebanese University, won the silver medal in the "Individual Competition" category at the Challenge and Innovation Forum (CIF-2021) in the State of Qatar, for her own project "Salamati", which is a smart medical device that facilitates the delivery of vital signs to patients to doctors and its mission is to alert the doctor when there is any sudden disorder.

In the "Group Competition" category at the forum, Sarhan competed within the "Pulse" team with 8 groups, and her team won third place after designing a project within 48 hours, which is a device to serve pregnant women to alert them and their doctor in emergency situations.

Eng. Sarhan, the only Lebanese participating in the forum, was also a member of the International Federation of Inventors' Associations (IFIA) based on her fulfillment of the conditions for joining the Federation.

It is known that the Challenge and Innovation Forum (CIF), which was organized in Qatar between November 7 and 11, 2021, included a series of competitions, events and interactive scientific programs that aimed to motivate and encourage about a hundred participating inventors from forty countries.

It is noteworthy that Sarhan pursued her research master's degree in medical physics and bioimaging at the Deanship of the Faculty of Science / Lebanese University and recently graduated.

The student Layal Maalouf (from the Faculty of Law, Political and Administrative Sciences at the Lebanese University) was elected as a member of the first Lebanese Youth Parliament for the seat of the second Metn constituency - Bikfaya and its suburbs.

 The student Maalouf presented to the elections an electoral program of three main points:

 Work on a joint project between the Lebanese University and the Consumer Protection Department aimed at recruiting students from the faculties of law, political and administrative sciences, economic sciences and business administration, whose task will be to monitor prices in commercial establishments, each within the vicinity of his residence, and to submit official reports thereon to the Authority and the concerned authorities.

Work on a draft law that calls for the punishment of any public facility that prevents citizens from the right to access information, in application of the principle of transparency in public institutions

Demand to lift the sentence of stray shooters

The student holds a law degree from the Faculty of Law and Political and Administrative Sciences / Lebanese University, where she is currently pursuing a first year of a master's degree in law and a second year of a bachelor's degree in political science.

 It is noteworthy that the idea of the model youth parliament was launched by the "Adyan" Foundation entitled "Young Leaders", which is an experiment based on an integrated project that defines the conditions for candidacy, voting, setting time limits, electoral divisions, districts, etc...

Reem Bayaa, a PhD student at the Lebanese University, won the first prize for the best scientific research for young researchers from the Mérieux Foundation's Gabriel Global Network, for her work on innovative approaches and the discovery of new immune markers for the diagnosis and follow-up of the effectiveness of tuberculosis treatment.

 Reem received her award during the 7th Scientific Forum of the Network, which was held in France between November 10 and 2021, <>, with the participation of a group of international research institutions and laboratories.

 The Lebanese University participated in the Gabriel Network Forum through the Laboratory of Health and Environmental Microbiology of the Faculty of Public Health and the Higher Institute of Doctorate in Science and Technology, and the director of the laboratory, Professor Munther Hamza, gave a lecture that focused on the reality of antibiotic resistance and the research and activities carried out by the laboratory in this field.

 Bayaa is pursuing a third-year doctoral degree in microbial diseases under the joint supervision of the Higher Institute of Doctorate in Science and Technology (EDST), the Laboratory of Health and Environmental Microbiology at the Lebanese University and the Laboratory of Emerging Pathogens (Laboratoire des Pathogènes Émergents) of the Université Claude Bernard - Lyon 1.

 Her thesis is supervised by Prof. Munther Hamza and Dr. Bashar Ismail from the Lebanese University and Dr. Jonathan Hoffman and Dr. Florence Adair from Claude Bernard University – Lyon 1.

 It is noteworthy that several international scientific journals have published parts of the study conducted by the student Bayaa on the diagnosis and treatment of tuberculosis.

Lebanese University student Laila Amer Al Kamali won the first place award for the best innovative project in the competition (Doctoriales 2021) organized by the French University (l'Université de La Réunion) between September 28 and October 2, 2021, for her project related to the creation of a drug for the treatment and prevention of diabetes and overweight.

 The competition provides PhD students with the opportunity to learn about the culture of entrepreneurship and work on presenting an innovative project that is evaluated by a specialized jury.

 Prior to the competition, forty PhD students from various fields and disciplines followed intensive workshops to provide them with the necessary tools to design projects that address various problems, and on the last day, innovative entrepreneurial projects were presented in front of a panel of specialized entrepreneurs, representatives of business incubators and a group of university researchers.

It is noteworthy that the student Kamali is pursuing the preparation of her doctoral thesis / specialization in natural sciences at the Higher Institute of Doctorate in Science and Technology - Lebanese University in partnership with (l'Université de La Réunion) under the supervision of Professor Dani Othman from the Lebanese University and Dr. Shaker Al-Qalamouni from the French University.

Student Zahraa Yassine from the Faculty of Fine Arts and Architecture at the Lebanese University won the third prize in the Arab student starpack 2021 competition in its fifth edition, organized by the Lebanese Center for Packaging (Liban Pack) in cooperation with the United Nations Industrial Development Organization (UNIDO) via the Internet due to the Corona circumstances.

 Under the supervision of Dr. Daniel Kattar, Yassin (Master 1 in Advertising Arts and Visual Communication) presented a smart packaging project entitled (Helbawi Bros' Rice Tote Bag) based on renewing the structural and visual aspects of rice bags and turning them into a ready-to-use bag as a shopping bag once they are finished using them as a container, based on the slogan "What plastic bags pollute, rice bags will save".

 The Arab student starpack competition targets university students in the Middle East and North Africa and aims to ensure inclusive and sustainable industrial development by engaging young people, unleashing and supporting their creativity, raising awareness about the importance of packaging and creating a real partnership between the packaging industry and the educational sector.

 It is noteworthy that this competition is accredited by the World Packaging Organization (WPO: World Packaging Organization), and the winners automatically qualify to participate in the World Packaging Competition organized by (WPO), giving them the opportunity to present their projects internationally.

Dr. Rima Atef Chaito, Lecturer at the Department of Legal Midwifery at the Faculty of Public Health, Lebanese University, won by acclamation the position of President of the Order of Midwives in Lebanon, for a four-year term.

 Five graduates from the Department of Legal Midwifery in various branches of the College of Public Health also won the membership of the Syndicate, namely Zeina Dagher, Jihan Al-Sella, Ebtisam Saif, Zainab Zuaiter and Samira Madi.

 Dr. Chaitou holds a PhD in Public Health / Health Care Management and Organization from the University of Montreal – Canada, studied her bachelor's and master's degrees at the Faculty of Public Health – Lebanese University, and previously chaired the scientific committee of the Order of Midwives.

A new and "gentle" victory for Lebanon on a global level, this time after the BBC listed Hayat Marshad on its list of the hundred most influential women in 2020.

 This year's list included eleven Arab women, while the first place remained at the top of the list without a specific name and was awarded to the "unknown heroine" in this exceptional year.

 A graduate of the Faculty of Arts and Humanities – the first branch of the Lebanese University and holds a degree in English Language and Literature – Class of 2010, Merched is an activist in Lebanon's leading feminist movement and a fighter to ensure women's access to justice, information, protection and rights.

 "The year 2020 can be described as the year of variables, and our efforts have recently focused on the impact of the Corona pandemic on the lives of women, the challenges facing female workers in health systems, educational and social institutions, and the additional burdens imposed on mothers to follow their children in distance learning, in addition to other topics related to domestic and electronic violence and encouraging women to report such cases," Mershad said in an interview with the Lebanese University website.

 Mershad, founder and co-executive director of Fe-Male, says she will continue to fight to educate women about their rights and how to protect themselves to achieve full gender equality and empower all women and girls.

 Regarding the Lebanese University, Marshad said: "Despite all the discussion about it, I consider that the Lebanese University remains the first educational edifice in Lebanon, as evidenced by its obtaining more than accreditation for the quality of its programs. We enter it and graduate from it with our competence and merit. This national edifice must be the focus of our attention and efforts to preserve it and reach all regions..."

 The BBC has dedicated this year's list of pioneering women activities during the pandemic, with countless people around the world making many sacrifices to help others and losing their lives trying to make a difference through what they do.

Within the framework of "Amaly Program" funded by the Embassy of Canada to Lebanon and managed by Mercy Corps (NGO), the North Lebanon Local Economic Development Agency (NORTH LEDA), in cooperation with the Chamber of Commerce, Industry, Agriculture of Tripoli and North Lebanon, the Lebanese University - Institute of Social Sciences and Al Midan NGO, organized a dialogue entitled "Economic Empowerment of Women" on 9 January 2020.

 The dialogue, hosted by the Institute of Social Sciences – Branch 3, included a number of topics related to gender discrimination and the challenges women and youth face to join the labor market.Dr. Maha Kayyal (Head of the Research Center at the Institute of Social Sciences), Dr. Rodrigue Balaa, (Chair of the Agricultural Engineering Technology at Issam Fares Faculty of Technology at the University of Balamand) and Mrs. Roula El Mrad, social work and advocacy activist, spoke at the dialogue, which was moderated by Dr. Chaouki Attieh (Professor at the Institute of Social Sciences).

 Lebanese university student - Faculty of Law and Political and Administrative Sciences (Branch 1, 2nd year), Sally Mahmoud Moussa presented a project on "Women's Rights" at the French Embassy in Beirut. The project ranked first among fifty projects submitted from Lebanon and the Arab world.

In an attempt to gain representation from the universities of Lebanon and the Arab world in raising women's awareness of their rights, Sally Moussa initially submitted a written report on her project to the French Embassy. She was then contacted with four other people to present their projects orally to a Specialized Human Rights Committee and was selected to attend workshops on Women's Rights to be held in France in June.

The Sally Moussa project included ideas and posters on "Women's Rights" in terms of strengthening its legal culture on the issues of the right to nationality, marriage of minors and equality with men .

In addition to her specialization in law, Sally is studying Economics (third year) at the Lebanese University - Faculty of Economics and Business Administration.


The Director of Lebanese University - Center of Profession, Innovation and Entrepreneurship (Centre MINE), Dr. Riad Mekdessi met with the representative of the ERASMUS PLUS program, Dr. Mary Abou Jaoudeh on 5 February 2020, to discuss an implementation plan for the “FREE Project” that will include disseminating the objectives and ensuring sustainability through training courses and workshops.

The objectives of "FREE Project", which seeks a successful partnership with Center MINE, focuses on the academic role of women and the model of empowerment, equality and sustainability in the universities of the Mediterranean region in light of the “2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development” .

A plan to empower women academically and challenge inequality, build positive relationships in the social and work environment ... all these degrees will be part of the plan developed by the Center for Professions, Innovation and Entrepreneurship of the Lebanese University (Center MINE) to help strengthen the academic and professional role of women, complementing the ERASMUS PLUS program. And the project (FREE PROJECT) signed with the Lebanese University´.

Empowerment, equality and sustainability of the female academic role model in the universities of the Mediterranean region: towards the 2030 Agenda. To implement this plan in its programs and activities, the center will start from some of the criteria included in the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development established by the United Nations, including the following points :
