17.2.3.Participate in international collaboration on gathering or measuring data for the SDGs

Lebanese University halves the global food waste and reduces food losses along production and supply chains for the sake of enhancing all staff, the faculty, and students' performance. In this sense, the Lebanese University initiates and participates in cross-sectoral dialogue about the SDGs, e.g. conferences involving government/NGOs.  

The President of the Lebanese University, Dr. Bassam Badran, received - in his office in the Central Administration Building / Museum - the Indian Ambassador to Lebanon, Mr. Mohamed Nour Rahman Sheikh, in the presence of the Embassy External Relations Officer, Mrs. Samar Zenati and Dr. Zoukan Al-Germani from the Lebanese University.

The two sides discussed joint cooperation between the Lebanese University and Indian universities and the development of the agreement signed between the Lebanese University and the University of Delhi.

The Dean of the Faculty of Fine Arts and Architecture at the Lebanese University, Dr. Hisham Zein El-Din, visited the Faculty of Engineering at Ain Shams University / Cairo, where he met with its Dean, Dr. Omar Al-Husseini, Head of the International Relations Department, Dr. Noha Gamal Saeed, Head of the Architecture Department at the Faculty, Dr. Mohamed Abdel Karim, Dr. Marwa Khalifa, and a number of heads of academic departments.

The two sides discussed the protocol of cooperation and exchange of experiences that is being prepared between the Faculty of Fine Arts and Architecture / Lebanese University and the Faculty of Engineering / Ain Shams University, while Dr. Al-Husseini presented the university's shield to Dean Zain El-Din.

The Department of the Master in Landscape and Landscape Planning at the Faculty of Fine Arts and Architecture / Lebanese University hosted twenty students from the Faculty of Engineering at Ain Shams University, between July 23 and 31, 2023 and within the course (Atelier Pluridisciplinaire du Paysage à l'Echelle Locale) APPEL) and the students of the two faculties shared ideas and proposals related to the (Branding Saida) project.) is the focus of the cooperation agreement between the Lebanese University and the Municipality of Sidon.

The Dean of the Faculty of Arts and Humanities at the Lebanese University, Dr. Heba Shendeb, received a Turkish academic delegation that included the Educational Counselor at the Turkish Embassy, Dr. Turgut Calal, the Dean of the Faculty of Sharia at Ankara University/Haci Bayram, Dr. Yacoub Ciulik, and the Head of the Department of Arabic Language and Translation at Barten University, Turkey, Dr. Mahmoud Qaddum.

The meeting was attended by Dr. Riad Othman, Dr. Nada Maraashly and Dr. Ali Nasser El-Din.

The two parties discussed the steps to implement the protocol of academic and scientific cooperation between the Lebanese University and a number of Turkish universities, including organizing research projects, conferences, seminars, joint workshops and exchanging information and experiences.

Within the framework of the cooperation agreement between the Higher Doctoral Institute in Arts, Humanities and Social Sciences at the Lebanese University and German universities, the Institute, in cooperation with the German Institute for Oriental Research, organized a conference entitled "A Critical Look at the Single, Interdisciplinary and Multiple Research Tracks in Doctoral Research Projects".

After a welcoming speech by the conference coordinator, Dr. Marx Schmitz, Visiting Professor at the Lebanese University, the Dean of the Institute, Dr. Mohamed Mohsen, gave a speech in which he focused on the importance of overlapping scientific tracks in the world of research and doctoral theses, stressing the need to employ theoretical approaches that belong to multiple fields of knowledge to comprehensively capture the research topic during the process of in-depth analysis of the results.

Brigadier General Mohsen pointed out that the unilateral interpretation of the results may constitute a real obstacle to the considered and multi-directional understanding of the problem translated in the form of research questions and hypotheses.

For his part, Dr. Schmitz addressed the challenges that students face when adopting only one track in research, and touched on the exchange of ideas with students and how to adopt overlapping tracks in their specializations.

Dr. Schmitz made recommendations to reach out to specialists in other fields to support knowledge in the process of overlapping scientific research paths.

Dr. Thomas Würtz, Assistant Director at the German Institute for Oriental Research, spoke about the importance of academic studies and research on humanitarian and Islamic topics and their overlap in doctoral projects.

After that, the participating students were divided into research groups and presented and discussed the topics of their theses to improve some concepts and ideas and adopt the overlap of knowledge paths in the field of specialization.

The deliberations and discussions, which took place in the conference workshops under the supervision of specialized professors, enriched the critical thinking of the participating students and opened wide horizons in the use of interdisciplinary and multiple approaches in scientific research.

The Institute seeks to complement this academic activity by organizing a complementary series of activities that serve to stabilize this scientific trend, which has become inherent in research production, especially between pure sciences and humanities.

Under the patronage and presence of the President of the Lebanese University, Dr. Bassam Badran, the Faculty of Law and Political and Administrative Sciences – French Branch, in partnership with the University of Aix-Marseille, organized an international conference entitled (Entreprise et transitions énergétique et environnementale).

The conference was attended by the Dean of the Faculty of Law, Political and Administrative Sciences, Dr. Habib Al-Azzi, the Dean of the Faculty of Economics and Business Administration, Dr. Salim Al-Maqdisi, the Director of the Faculty of Law - French Branch, Dr. Tharwat Al-Zahr, in addition to a high-level European delegation and human rights figures.

After the national anthem and the university anthem, Dr. Al-Zahr delivered the opening speech, referring to the distinguished relations between the Faculty of Law – French Branch and the University of Aix-Marseille represented by the Vice-President Dr. Jean-François Marche and Dr. Isabelle Grossi, representative of the Dean of the Faculty of Law, Dr. Jean-Baptiste Perrier.

Dr. Al-Zahr stressed that the conference comes as a result of the strong cooperation and coordination between the two universities, pointing to the importance of the conference topic and shedding light on the future of the environment and energy in Lebanon.

For his part, the Vice President of the University of Aix-Marseille, Dr. Jean-François Marche, stressed the importance of continuous scientific cooperation with the Lebanese University, while the Dean congratulated the Faculty of Law - French Branch for organizing the conference in cooperation with the French University.

After that, President Badran delivered a speech in which he praised the distinguished relationship between the Lebanese University and the universities of the European Consortium, pointing to the importance of the topics discussed at the conference.

The conference witnessed a series of interventions by Dr. Salim Al-Maqdisi, Dr. Marie Lamoureux, Dr. Haitham Fadlallah, Judge Lamis Haj Diab and Dr. Yves Troeli, and the discussion was moderated by Brigadier General Al-Azzi and Dr. Amal Abdullah to be presented by Dr. Gisabel Grossi.

The Faculty of Law and Political and Administrative Sciences – French Branch at the Lebanese University hosted a high-level delegation of representatives of the Francophone Consortium universities, the French Embassy and the Francophonie University Agency, in the presence of the Dean of the Faculty, Dr. Habib Al-Azzi, the Director of the Branch, Dr. Tharwat Al-Zahr, and the Head of the Private Law Department, Dr. Amal Abdullah.

The delegation included the University of Paris Panthéon-Assas represented by Vice-President Dr. Emmanuel Chevreau, the University of Aix-Marseille represented by Vice-President Dr. Jean-François Marche and Dr. Isabelle Grossi, representative of the Dean of its Faculty of Law, Université Libre de Bruxelles, represented by the Dean of the Faculty of Law, Dr. Julie Allard, University of Grenoble Alpes.) represented by the Vice Dean of the Faculty of Law, Dr. Claire Anne Michel, the University of (Rennes) represented by Dr. Afif Daher and the University of (Montpellier))

Represented by Dr. Séferin Cabriac, Ms. Lea Renault, Representative of the Cooperation Attaché at the French Embassy, and Mr. Jean-Noël Paleo, Director of the Regional Office of the Agence Universitaire de la Francophonie.

After an absence of three years due to the Corona pandemic, the meeting was held and constituted an occasion to renew and follow up on the cooperation agreement between the two parties, then a meeting was organized with professors, students and the president of the Association of Veterans of the Faculty of Law – French Branch.

The President of the Francophone Cultural Club at the College, Aya Dalloul, and Maroun Abi Zeid, presented the club's activities.

The President of the Lebanese University, Prof. Bassam Badran, signed two cooperation protocols, the first with the Arab Society for Political Science, represented by its president, Professor Gamal Zahran, and the second with the Institute of Studies and Research in Cairo of the Arab League Educational, Cultural and Scientific Organization, represented by its director, Professor Mohamed Kamal.

The two protocols, which were signed during the opening of the annual conference of the Arab Society for Political Science in Beirut, aim to strengthen academic and research cooperation between the signatories, exchange researchers, conduct joint research and studies, and prepare reports on scientific and cultural topics of common interest.

It also aims to exchange faculty members holding a doctorate degree to participate in lectures, seminars, training seminars, workshops and master's thesis discussion committees.

The signing ceremony was attended by the Dean of the Faculty of Law, Political and Administrative Sciences, Professor Habib Al-Azzi, the former Dean Professor Camille Habib, the Secretary-General of the Arab Society for Political Science, Dr. Hassan Al-Ashmar, the representative of the Center for Arab Unity Studies, Dr. Jamal Wakim, members of the Association, a group of Lebanese University professors, and Lebanese and Arab researchers.

The Dean of the Faculty of Dentistry at the Lebanese University, Prof. Georges Aoun, received the Chairman of the Board of Directors of the University College of Kut in Iraq, Professor Taleb Zidan Al-Moussawi, accompanied by Dr. Edmond Shibli and Dr. Ghassan Ibrahim.

The meeting discussed ways of scientific, academic and research cooperation and exchange of experiences between the two faculties, in light of the agreement signed between the Lebanese University and the Faculty of Kout University in 2022.

Lebanese University student Laila Amer Al Kamali won the first place award for the best innovative project in the competition (Doctoriales 2021) organized by the French University (l'Université de La Réunion) between September 28 and October 2, 2021, for her project related to the creation of a drug for the treatment and prevention of diabetes and overweight.

The competition provides PhD students with the opportunity to learn about the culture of entrepreneurship and work on presenting an innovative project that is evaluated by a specialized jury.

Prior to the competition, forty PhD students from various fields and disciplines followed intensive workshops to provide them with the necessary tools to design projects that address various problems, and on the last day, innovative entrepreneurial projects were presented in front of a panel of specialized entrepreneurs, representatives of business incubators and a group of university researchers.

It is noteworthy that the student Kamali is pursuing the preparation of her doctoral thesis / specialization in natural sciences at the Higher Institute of Doctorate in Science and Technology - Lebanese University in partnership with (l'Université de La Réunion) under the supervision of Professor Dani Othman from the Lebanese University and Dr. Shaker Al-Qalamouni from the French University.

The Center for Careers, Innovation and Entrepreneurship at the Lebanese University (Centre MINE) announced that Abdel Fattah Al-Habashi from the Faculty of Public Health – Third Branch has been selected to participate in the American Institutes Program (SUSIS) for Global Leaders Students for Summer 2023.

The program provides an opportunity for foreign undergraduate students to deepen their understanding of the United States and enhance their leadership skills, as well as promote cultural exchange between participants and participants to be global leadership students.

The Abyssinian student was selected to be part of the Global Student Leaders Program in Religious Diversity and Democracy, which will be hosted by Temple University in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, USA.

The Institute of Social Sciences (ISS) has participated in several activities on SDG's organized by HE the Prime minister's office in Lebanon.

In addition, a number of activities were co-organized by the ISS and the United Nations Population Fund - United Nations Fund for Population Activities (UNFPA) on the SDG5.

2.1 Report SDG "5

This report is a preliminary reading and a situational review of the "Agenda 2030" Sustainable Development Goals SDGs in the Lebanese context. It focuses in particular on SDG "5", which is dedicated to gender issues and gender equality.

ISS and UNESCO have worked together on issues related to gender within the SDG's.Â
